Fun Facts about the Nutcracker!

BBDC is is excited that Nutcracker Season is finally here! This year our PreProfessional Dance Company will be presenting this Holiday Classic! Spend the afternoon with us on December 21, 2019, at Toms River Intermediate East. Tickets are now available on our website. We are offering easy online ticketing for this production!

When you think of ballet and the holidays, the first thing that pops into your mind is probably The Nutcracker.

The Nutcracker is known around the world as being the classic fairy-tale ballet about a young girl who receives a magical nutcracker. For many families, watching The Nutcracker this time of year has become an annual tradition. But, there are a few facts that most people don’t know…

  1. The Nutcracker is based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffman called “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”. The original story is much darker than the ballet we all love, featuring a bloody battle between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King’s army.
  2. The story was written in 1816… Whoa, that’s over 200 years ago!
  3. You know the catchy instrumental music that makes you want to twirl around in your tutu? It was composed by Peter Tchaikovsky, who also composed the music for Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.
  4. In Germany, nutcrackers are believed to bring good luck and are often given to children as Christmas presents.
  5. The New York Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker uses about 500 pounds of paper confetti to create the snowstorm, 150 different costumes, 7 layers of tulle for the Sugar Plum Fairy’s tutu, 500 bobby pins, and 144 jingle bells for each Candy Cane costume!
  6. Marichen, Maria, Masha, Clara… The name of the young girl who saves the nutcracker prince has changed many times! In the original story, she is named Maria or Marie, while Clara is the name of one of her dolls. In Germany, she sometimes goes by Marichen. In Russia, she was given the name Masha.
  7. Hollywood is even getting in on the action, having released the movie The Nutcracker and the Four Realms by Disney. The film stars Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Foy, and Morgan Freeman… just to name a few! There is a blissful bit of choreography, featuring dance star Misty Copeland as the Sugar Plum Fairy.

The Nutcracker and other Ballet Things!

This Season we are so excited to be able to offer our PreProfessional Dance Company Dancers more Ballet! Ballet is the basis of all dance techniques and we are so lucky to have 2 amazing Ballet Instructors on our Faculty.

Our Director Miss Lindsay trained with the Academy of Dance Arts in Red Bank, NJ with Jennifer Church, where she studied Royal Academy of Dance Ballet Syllabus. Miss Lindsay was examined by top examiners from London, passing all of her RAD Exams through the PreProfessional Level. Miss Lindsay trained with Victoria Hall and Daniel Catanach of the New York City Ballet, and was accepted on Full Scholarship to train and perform with 2000 Feet a Dance Company based out of Philadelphia. She performed lead roles with The Company of Dance Arts in their Nutcracker Ballet for more than 10 years, she also danced with the Garden State Ballet, Hartford Ballet, and American Repertory Ballet in many different Classical Ballet Productions. Miss Lindsay is also Certified to teach Ballet through Associated Dance Teachers of New Jersey, passing both a high level written test as well as a Ballet physical exam. She is also Certified in Barre Above, the Ballet Training Exercise method used to strengthen dancers in all stages of their careers.

Miss Lindsay will be teaching a weekly Ballet Repertoire Class. Repertoire class dancers will be learning ballets, or sections of ballets, from the classical repertoire. You might learn a part of Swan Lake, or Sleeping Beauty, or maybe a more contemporary ballet by a modern-day choreographer. Dance History will also be explored in this class! Dancers will learn everything from Balanchine to Twyla Tharp!

We are so excited to introduce Miss Alicia, who will be teaching a 90 minute weekly Advanced Ballet Technique Class. Bringing her excellent training to our students will help us as we train for our First Annual Nutcracker Performances!

Ms. Ceraldi was classically trained in Vaganova and Balanchine method of ballet since the age of six. She was the recipient of many scholarships throughout her training including School of American Ballet and Walnut Hill School. In her professional career, she performed many principle and soloist roles in many well-known ballets such as Les Syphide, Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire, and The Nutcracker. She also holds credits for performing for the Miss America Pageant, Jerry Lewis Telethon, and multiple TV and commercial dance education programs.

Following her professional career, she owned and operated her own school for 13 years. After having her 4th child she chose to step down from owning and became the Artistic Director. Ms. Ceraldi finds great pride and pleasure through teaching and choreographing. Over the past several years, she has received multiple awards for her choreography and acknowledgement of her students’ technique. She is also the proud instructor of multiple competition title winners, special awards and scholarship holders. Many of her students have been recipients of scholarships to many professional academies including American Ballet Theater, Joffrey, Kirov, Alvin Ailey, and The Rock School. Her students have also been selected to perform at Carnegie Hall, Apollo Theater, Music Videos, and short dance films.

Ms. Ceraldi is currently PBT certified and Rhythmworks certified, and is so excited to start working with the Broadway Bound Dancers!

Don’t forget Nutcracker Auditions are coming up! September 21! All dancers are encouraged to audition! Please contact the studio for more information!

Trapeze Flexibility Workshop

Want to improve flexibility and core stability in a fun new way! Come try our Trapeze Workshop on 4/22! Classes will include work on our brand new yoga trapezes! So, what is aerial yoga good for? How will it improve my overall strength, health and well-being? The list of benefits of anti-gravity yoga are similar to the list of benefits of a traditional yoga practice with a few important differences.

  1. It relieves compression in the spine.

One of the biggest benefits of hanging in the hammock during poses like downward facing dog or back bends is the relief on the spine. Instead of the natural downward compression of your spine produced by gravity, the muscles in your spine release and relax as you hang, reducing pressure and joint compression.

2. Aerial yoga challenges your central nervous system, mental capacity and proprioception.

Simply put, practicing in the silk yoga swing adds a level of elegant complexity as well as assistance to simple postures that requires mental focus and patience as you learn how to move your body through each pose.

3. It Increases pulling strength.

This particular benefit is probably the most interesting because the movement type of “pulling,” like when you perform a pull-up, isn’t found in the traditional yoga practice. With the repetitive pressing in yoga, during sun salutations and/or chaturanga, can create muscular imbalances in the shoulders. Over time, this can lead to repetitive stress injuries.

The act of pulling yourself up into the hammock as well as during other transitions is a great way to keep your shoulders balanced and healthy in both pulling and pressing.

4. Praticing anti-gravity yoga improves flexibility.

With the help of the silk hammock, practitioners are able to refine and improve their alignment and relax into the pose. The ability to relax the body leads to improved flexibility.

5. It’s beginner-friendly.

Aerial yoga is accessible not just for advanced practitioners but for beginners as well. With the added support of the hammock, new students can play with posture and alignment while building the strength to execute yoga poses on their own. Not only that, it allows for questions and added support from the teacher as the number of students per class is lower than a traditional yoga practice. Check out 2 year old Tiny Dancer Nattie working on her unassisted bridge pose! Dancers of all ages and levels can benefit from this Workshop!

This class is open to everyone! You do not need to be a BBDC student to enjoy the benefits of this class! Space is very limited! Contact the studio ASAP if you are interested!

Maybe it is because they aren’t very athletic, and feel that is the only way to get some exercise. Have you ever considered taking a dance class? This offers an option for those who are not so athletic to get some great exercise. Below are 13 benefits for adults when they take dance classes.

  4. Dancing reduces stress. It can be very enjoyable to have an hour each week to forget all your troubles as you dance your cares away! It helps to diminish depression and lift your spirits
  5. Dancing is good for your heart. It is the perfect activity for those who are at risk for cardiovascular disease. It improves your heart health, breathing, and quality of life.
  6. Dancing gives you better balance. Good posture is required for dancing and dancing helps you stabilize and gain better control of your body.
  7. Dancing increases your energy level. Studies find that dance can improve physical performance and increase energy in adults.
  8. Dance class gives you the perfect opportunity to make new friends and socialize. Being socially engaged leads to increased happiness, reduces stress, and gives you a strong immune system.
  9. Dance class offers insight to other cultures and customs, through the different styles of dance and music you will encounter as well as your fellow classmates.
  10. Dancing increases your self-esteem and confidence. As you concentrate on learning new dance steps, your self-esteem will rise. As you learn graceful new ways for your body to move, you will gain a better appreciation and respect for your body, which will result in a healthier body image.
  11. Dancing offers a creative outlet to express your personality and emotions without using words. It is a great way to be creative!

Ava Cota from Dance Moms comes to BBDC!

We are so excited to be hosting a Workshop with Ava Cota and Jeanette Cota from Dance Moms!

Ava and her mom Jeanette will be in studio on September 15th at 9am!

This workshop will feature a 90 minute Class and Meet and Greet! Such a great opportunity for dancers ages 7+! Dancers will be able to dance with Ava and be inspired to take their dancing to the next level!! Open to all dancers in the Tri State area! Everyone is welcome! Dancers will be included in promotional material and featured in Ava’s upcoming YouTube videos!

Ava is a huge advocate for anti-bullying after everything she has gone through in her dance career this far, she’d love to be able to chat with other kids who may be experiencing the same thing. Ava and her mother are touring studios all over the country this week to inspire young dancers to rediscover the artistry of dance. Recently Ava has been inspired by the hit Netflix series, “13 REASONS WHY” and the headlines in the news today to start her own social media movement. She calls it the #13Reasons4Me or #13ReasonsofLove Movement. The goal of this movement is for teens (kids & adults too!) to help lift themselves up, as well as lift others up at a time where the rest of the world is trying to tear people down.
Ava says, “I started this challenge to create something that was a positive movement on the social media platforms to spread love. In the world we live in, it seems all actions are taken out of hate of oneself or hate of others! This movement encourages kids/teenagers to look at the good in their lives and in themselves which I think can be very powerful.”
Ava is encouraging people to watch her video on social media in hopes that other kids & teens will join in and be a voice across all social media.  “I am not one to be quiet when things around me are falling apart, and I hope that I can be an influential voice to kids to make sure our next generation is filled with a whole lot more love!”
